Admission to the Profession
The next examination will take place in Dublin on Thursday 10th May 2012.
Applications must be with the Registrar on or before 30th April 2012.

The venue will be the Edith Stein Room, St Teresa's Pastoral Centre, Clarendon Street, Dublin 2 (Entrance via the Archway at Bell Cafe beside Clarendon Street Church and opposite the Brown Thomas Public Carpark).
Candidates should attend for registration at 10.45. The examination will start at 11.00 and it will take two hours.
The Notaries Public Examination Regulations 2007 - 2010 (as amended and consolidated) are now in force for all new applications, and they provide inter alia that applicants must be a "a practicing solicitor or barrister in good standing who on the date of his or her application to sit the Faculty Examination, has not less than five years post qualification experience in the general practice of law (at least two consecutive years of which shall be in the period immediately preceding the application) who seeks to be appointed a Notary Public".
Candidates please note that the Education Regulations are under constant review, and in particular the Education Committee have requested of the Governing Council of the Faculty that the requirement to produce a reference from a local solicitor in order to sit the examination be removed and candidates may presume this will not be required for the 2012 examination.

13th September 2011Notaries are appointed by the Chief Justice of Ireland on application by way of Petition in open court. The Petition must be supported by Certificates of Fitness signed by at least six Solicitors practising in the area or district for which an appointment is sought and by a corresponding number of persons representative of the business community i.e. commerce and industry, in the area or district concerned.
Before making an application seeking appointment, the applicant must have obtained a Certificate of Examination from the Faculty of Notaries Public in Ireland in accordance with the Practice Direction of the Chief Justice made on 28 March 1994 pursuant to Order 127 of the Rules of the Superior Courts (No. 2) of 1993 (S.I. No. 265 of 1993)
The Certificate of Examination is obtained as a result of an applicant successfully passing an examination conducted by the Examination Body of the Faculty. The syllabus for the examination to obtain a Certificate of Examination is as follows:
